This light-heavyweight tussle between fierce domestic rivals has been long in the making, having been postponed back in October after Azeez suffered a back injury during his final training session before the fight.

But there have been no such late issues this time around as two undefeated former friends and sparring partners prepare to do battle in London.

Both Buatsi and Azeez are currently ranked inside the top four with each of the major governing bodies in a stacked 175lbs division, currently dominated by unified IBF, WBC and WBO champion Artur Beterbiev, who brutally stopped Callum Smith in Quebec City last month, plus fellow undefeated Russian superstar Dmitry Bivol, the long-time holder of the WBA crown.

The winner of Buatsi vs Azeez is slated to get a shot at that title that Canelo-conqueror Bivol has held since 2017 and last defended with ease against another British challenger in Lyndon Arthur in Saudi Arabia before Christmas.

Buatsi is a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist who stands at 17-0 as a professional with 13 knockouts, a former British and WBA international light-heavyweight champion who eased to a comfortable points win over the previously unbeaten Pawel Stepian on his last appearance in Birmingham last May, having also edged out Craig Richards in all-British thriller 12 months prior.

Azeez, meanwhile, is 20-0 with 13 knockouts, beating both Khalid Graidia and Thomas Faure in 2023 after previous victories over the likes of Rocky Fielding, Shakan Pitters, Reece Cartwright and Hosea Burton, having now held all of the English, British, Commonwealth and European belts.

Joshua Buatsi and Dan Azeez go from friends to foes when they square off this Saturday. After their first fight was postponed due to an Azeez injury, Buatsi returned to the ring and fought Pawel Stepian this past May. He defeated Stepian via decision, but ‘Just Business’ thought his performance was ‘average’. Hoping to avoid another average performance, Buatsi requested a ‘big fight’ for his next appearance, which led to Azeez again in this WBA title eliminator.

On the line is an opportunity to fight WBA titleholder Dmitry Bivol, a name Buatsi has wanted for years.

“A win in this will put me in a very strong position,” said Buatsi in an interview with Jake Donovan of Boxing Scene. “Depending on the timing of it, the winner on Saturday could get Bivol next or the winner of Bivol-Beterbiev. I will only have to decide whether I want to fight for one belt or all.”

Though he had to wait a few months, Azeez is ready for his fight against Buatsi.

“Josh is the perfect dance partner,” said Azeez in an interview with Boxing Scene. “From our spars, they’re never boring so I can’t imagine what this is going to be like. 10 ounce gloves. He can whack. I’ve got a bit of dig on me too.”

Both British light-heavyweights will enter Wembley Arena unbeaten, but – barring a draw – only one will leave with his record intact and with a second reign as British champion under way.

Thirty-year-old Buatsi, a former British title holder and Olympic medalist, last fought in May, beating Pawel Stepien on points. Azeez – who also previously held the British belt – then fought in July, outpointing Khalid Graidia.

Buatsi (17-0, 13 knockouts) and Azeez (20-0, 13 KOs) were initially due to fight each other in October, but Azeez, 34, suffered a back injury in the final session of his training camp, leading the bout to be postponed.

British pair Joshua Buatsi and Dan Azeez will put their unbeaten records on the line when they face off in a crucial encounter for the light heavyweight division this weekend, with all the action set to unfold from Wembley Arena in London.

The duo bring pristine professional records to the table as they look set to battle it out for a credible shot at a world title bout in the coming months in what is effectively a WBA light heavyweight eliminator, with the winner set to see their stock soar.

For Buatsi, the former Rio 2016 bronze medalist is looking to make good on the promise he has shown since leaving his amateur status behind, though consecutive victories by decision have arguably blunted his impressive knockout power since. Azeez might not be the bigger fish of the two, but he will certainly feel he can get the jump on his countryman and leapfrog to the top of the pecking order as both men look for a fight with either Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol beyond this bout.

Elsewhere on the bill, Adam Azim and Enoch Poulsen will face each other in a junior welterweight contest, while Ben Whittaker and Khalid Graidia bring another light heavyweight battle to the table, but how can you watch it all

The undefeated fighters were meant to meet late in 2023, but injury postponed the bout, and we’ve got it today from OVO Arena Wembley. On the undercard, Adam Azim returns to defend his light heavyweight title, plus fights featuring Ben Whittaker, Caroline Dubois, and Jeamie TKV.

Saturday night's BOXXER card features plenty of intriguing undercard fights, including the latest outing for exciting European super-lightweight champion Adam Azim.

Caroline Dubois makes the first defence of her IBO lightweight title won against Magali Rodriguez at York Hall back in October, while confident Olympic silver medalist Ben Whittaker is also in action for the sixth time as a pro.Azeez (20-0, 13 KOs) has known Buatsi for several years, as the pair are friends and former sparring partners. While the 34-year-old pressure fighter doesn't have his opponent's amateur pedigree, he has improved from fight to fight as a professional, claiming British, Commonwealth and European championships.

The winner of this bout would be in line to face WBA champ Dmitry Bivol. However, a title shot will likely have to wait as Bivol is expected to face IBF, WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine counterpart Artur Beterbiev in an undisputed title clash this summer.
